As Roman Catholic children we were taught Jesus was popularly known as "Jesus of Nazareth".
Nazareth, a historic town in northern Israel that is mentioned in the Gospels as the home of Joseph and Mary, the parents of Jesus.
Now we understand, Jesus was known as the "Nararene".

Nazarene is a member of a group of Jews who (during the early history of the Christian Church) accepted Jesus as the Messiah; they accepted the Gospel According to Matthew but rejected the Epistles of St. Paul and continued to follow Jewish law and celebrate Jewish holidays.
They were later declared heretic by Church of Rome
Our religious historian, Holger Kersten, says, the word 'Nazarene" derives from Aramic root "Nazar".
Aramic is the mother tongue of Jesus.
Nazarene means, an observer or preserver of "sacred rites".
Nazarene is of the Old Testament "Nazarites" a group that existed long before the times of Jesus.
Jesus never belonged to any one group.
He refused to be subject to any imposed laws.
Quite a revolutionary our Jesus was, eh !
We wonder why the Catholic Church chose to make our Jesus was from the village of Nazareth.
Whereas this village is never mentioned in any literature older than Jesus.
May be some quirk in a quiet corner in the Vatican.
